Care & Use

When to Plant(see zone map to find your zone):
Zone 1: September - May
Zone 2: Any time
Zone 3: Any time
Zone 4: February - November

Soil: Prepare with compost and well-rotted manure and allow the soil to settle for 1 -2 weeks before planting. Fresh manure has a tendency to burn younger lettuce seedlings, so corporating a green manure in your soil as part of the preparation is also ideal.

Soil pH Level: 6.5 -7.5

Position: Full sun, but will tolerate some shade

How to Plant: You can sow the seeds directly into the veggie patch or in punnets, to transplant once germinated. Sow on the surface of the bed, Just make sure that the birds don't peck at the seeds.

Spacing : 20 cm

Depth: 0.5 - 1cm

Companion Plants: Radish, Bean, Carrot

Brand story

Australia has diverse climatic zones from the tropical far north to the cold of Tasmania so there may be some tweaking for where you live. In general, the cooler months with less harsh sun is the time for:

  • beans, broad beans and peas
  • bulbs like onion, shallots, garlic
  • Brassicas like broccoli, broccolini, cauliflower
  • tomatoes, eggplant
  • root vegetables like radish, beetroot, turnip and potato
  • spinach, salad greens, silverbeet
  • herbs, chives, coriander, parsley.

MOST IMPORTANT TIP: Just do it! Don't get caught up in not knowing what to do. Put some seeds in pots in a sunny spot and give it a go. Learn as you grow. Keep the water up and fertilise fortnightly with liquid seaweed.
