Is it safe to sleep with a diffuser in the room?
It depends on the type of diffuser and the essential oils you use. Some diffusers, such as ultrasonic or nebulising ones, can be used safely overnight as long as they have a timer or an automatic shut-off feature. These diffusers use water or air to disperse the oil molecules into the air as a fine mist. However, you should not use these diffusers continuously for more than 30 to 60 minutes at a time, as this can cause overexposure to the oils and lead to adverse health effects. Definitely avoid synthetic perfume oils as these can cause headaches and breathing difficulty.
Other diffusers, such as ceramic burners or heat diffusers, should never be used overnight or left unattended as they involve a naked flame or a heating element that can pose a fire hazard or burn the oils. These diffusers use heat to evaporate the oil molecules into the air, which can alter their chemical composition and reduce their therapeutic benefits. These diffusers do not have a timer or an automatic shut-off feature, so they can run out of oil or water and overheat. Therefore, you should never sleep with these diffusers on in your room.
A natural alternative to using a diffuser overnight is a pillow spray or a Banksia aroma pod. The Banskia aroma pod slowly releases oils into the air without any heat or electricity. Pillow sprays are bottles of water mixed with essential oils that you can spray on your pillow or bed sheets before you sleep.
How to Make Natural Diffuser Oil For Your Oil Diffuser
There are different ways to make natural diffuser oil for your oil diffuser, depending on the type of diffuser you have.
For reed diffusers:you will need a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, safflower oil, or sweet almond oil, and some essential oils of your choice. You will also need some bamboo skewers or rattan reeds to insert into the oil mixture.
For plug-in electric, electronic or ultrasonic diffusers: you will need water and essential oils only.
To make diffuser oil for a reed diffuser, follow these steps:
- Pour 1/4 cup (60 ml) of your carrier oil into a glass bottle. You can use a funnel to avoid spilling.
- Add 20 to 30 drops of your favourite essential oil, or combine different oils for a more unique fragrance. Some examples of essential oil blends are: bergamot and patchouli, cinnamon and wild orange, lavender and eucalyptus, or white fir and cypress.
- Consider adding 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol or vodka to help bind the water to the essential oil and make it travel faster up the reeds.
- Close the bottle and shake it well to mix everything together.
Use the diffuser oil in your reed diffuser bottle or jar. Insert the skewers or reeds into the jar and flip them every few days to refresh the scent.
To make diffuser oil for a plug-in oil diffuser, follow these steps:
- Fill the water reservoir of your plug-in diffuser with water up to the fill line.
- Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil or blend. The amount will depend on the size of your diffuser and how strong you want the scent to be. A general rule is to use 3 to 5 drops per 100 ml of water.
- Turn on your plug-in diffuser and enjoy the aroma.
