Introducing: The tree-planting search engine Ecosia

Ecosia is a search engine based in Berlin, Germany. They donate 80% of their profits to nonprofit organisations that focus on reforestation. They are also known as the search engine that plants trees, considering they have planted 146 million trees worldwide so far; the title is deserved. As well as planting trees, your searches are also powered by renewables! You remove about 0.5 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere with each search!

Why trees?

Ecosia explains in this post that there are three reasons the plant trees.

The planet: Trees are the most effective CO2 absorbers and help mitigate climate change and other benefits.
Communities: The tree-planting project is helping lift communities out of poverty by providing jobs and financial stability.
Animals: By restoring landscapes and supporting biodiversity, a habitat is provided for animals worldwide.

Where are the trees planted?

The trees are planted in vulnerable biodiversity hotspots, bird migration routes, and environmental crisis zones, in countries that include Haiti, Bolivia, Thailand, India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Spain, Australia and more. They aren't simply planting trees anywhere but putting in a genuine effort to partner with locals and find out where the trees are needed most. They also support other methods such as sowing, natural regeneration and forest management. You can find a gallery of all the countries the trees are planted here.
