Our Whipped Calendula and Coconut Body Butter will soothe dry, chapped skin affected by the elements. Calendula has been used for centuries ceremonially and therapeutically, and is a common ingredient in DIY skin care due to its healing and calming properties. When used in skin care, it is a great moisturiser for dry skin and for severely chapped or split skin, as it helps to soothe the area and reduce pain. It's antiseptic and antimicrobial properties help speed up the healing of wounds and minor cuts, and can also help to relieve insect bites, acne, bed sores and rashes. Ecsema, psoriasis, dermatitis and other skin problems can also be soothed by calendula, and according to Mountain High Herbs, the herb stimulates the production of collagen at wound sites and minimizes scarring. This recipe will make enough to fill a 240ml glass mason jar
Place the calendula petals in a medium sized mason jar or glass jug. Add the coconut oil to the jug. Place the jar/jug into a saucepan with about 5cm of water in it and turn to medium heat. Once the oil has melted melted, set to low heat for around 1-2 hours until the oil has taken on a yellow hue from the flowers. Top up water in the saucepan if needed.
Remove from heat and strain the oil into another jar or jug using a garni bag, cheese cloth or muslin. Ensure to squeeze out all excess oil.
Place the jug/jar the oil mixture is now in back into a saucepan with about 5cm of water in it and turn to medium heat. Add the shea butter, and once melted remove from heat immediately to avoid overheating.
Pour the oil mixture into a small glass mixing bowl and let it cool in the refrigerator for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until it just starts to firm up.
Remove from refrigerator. Using a hand mixer, beat the mixture until it's light and fluffy, scraping the sides down as you go. This may take a few minutes.
Add your essentials oils and whip for another minute.
Spoon into a 240ml glass mason jar and seal.
