Use a natural perfume made with pure essential oils
Natural perfumes, like the ones you can find at Biome, are made using pure essential oils derived from flowers and herbs, and generally a carrier oil or natural sugar alcohol. They are free from petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances and preservatives, and provide a beautiful, long lasting, toxin free scent. Discover our range of natural perfumes and colognes here > Or try your hand at making one! Below is the ingredients list of a popular Glade automatic spray product that you can find in Woolworths stores around Australia. The scent is 'Hawaiian Breeze'. We've expanded the fragrance tab so you can see what Glade's Hawaiian Breeze smells like. Mmm, tropical! Not! As illustrated above, plug in, automatic and spray 'air fresheners' are made up of synthetic fragrance, synthetic preservatives, and propellants like isobutane, butane and propane. The majority of these ingredients are derived from petrochemicals. Brands are notoriously discreet about what actually goes into these products, so we as consumers could never be completely certain about what we are actually spraying around. If you want to use a room spray, we recommend a natural room spray with close to nature ingredients. Our Biome room mist is a very popular choice - it smells just like you're walking through our stores! Spray our room mist around living spaces, in your car, around smelly sports equipment or in your office. Another way to fragrance your space naturally is to incorporate 100% pure essential oils into your green cleaning routine. All you need is some unscented liquid castile soap and pure essential oils of your choice. Here are some ideas: All purpose cleaner - in a spray bottle, mix 1/8 cup castile soap, 500ml water and a few drops of tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil. Spray and wipe as needed. Window and glass cleaner - in a spray bottle, mix 1/2 tablespoon castile soap, 500ml water and a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Spray and wipe as needed. Follow up with a mix of half vinegar and half water if desired. Toilet cleaner - in a spray bottle, mix 1/4 cup castile soap, 500ml water and a few drops of tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil. Spray toilet bowl thoroughly, sprinkle with baking soda and scrub bowl with toilet brush. Let sit for 10 minutes before flushing. Floor cleaning - in a bucket, mix 1/2 cup castile soap, 11 litres of warm water and a few drops of rose geranium essential oil. Mop floors and allow to dry. An ultrasonic (water) diffuser is one of the best ways to diffuse essential oils and fragrance your space naturally. They are safe to use and remove the risk of hot oil or the dangers of burning candles. There is no heating or harmful chemicals involved in the process, and you only need a few drops of essential oil, so it is quite economical too. Our diffusers are made with minimal plastic components (not 100% plastic free unfortunately - these are hard to find!) and are safe to use for longer periods of time.
